The $64,000 answer By Deb Steranksy

Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, field coordinator for the Bishop’s Partners in Mission, presented this year’s report for Imagine No Malaria and Imagine No Mortgage. Two years ago, Bishop Park challenged

us to live out the gospel and support two important missions. One is Imagine No Malaria.

to

Imagine No Malaria is an initiative reduce, maybe someday eliminate,

malaria around the world. Four hundred thirty-eight thousand lives are lost to malaria every year. Every two minutes someone dies from malaria, and over 80 percent of those are children. One way to reduce dramatically the threat from malaria is to sleep under nets impregnated

with insecticide in order to keep away the mosquitoes that continue your at riverwoods and normandie ridge

carry the disease. Nets cost about $10. The challenge is to raise $1 million to buy nets. The United Methodist Church, together with partners such as the Gates Foundation, has cut the death rate among children from malaria by half.

Bishop

Park presented a check for $64,331.31 to Dr. Abayasekara for Imagine No Malaria. The second part of Bishop’s Partners in Mission is to help eliminate the mortgage on Mission Central. Mission Central enables churches to be more missional by being a clearinghouse of supplies for times of disaster. Dr. Abayasekara encouraged Annual Conference members to visit the table for Bishop’s Partners in Missions in Brubaker Auditorium to pick up brochures that have some ideas for how churches can become involved in his life changing initiative.

Residents volunteer to help with Grande Illumination, an event that raises funds for Benevolent Care.
