Warm tributes paid to UKIP’s quiet man


TRIBUTES have been paid to Maidstone’s first-ever UKIP coun- cillor and leader of the group, Cllr Dave Sargeant, who has died sud- denly after a heart attack. Cllr Sargeant (77), passed away at Maidstone Hospital after com- plaining of chest pains at his home inWestmoreland Road, Shepway. He is survived by his wife June, daughters Ruth and Heather and grandchildren Megan and James. A statement released by his fam-


ily said he would be “greatly missed”. Cllr Sargeantwas an active mem-


ber of theVine Church who greeted worshippers at the door and was known for a fine singing voice. Hewas passionate about helping


young people, acting as a mentor to many of them, and fought hard to protect the play areas in his patch and get improved facilities for youngsters. His friend and colleague Cllr

shire, he was a former pastor and was respected for his quiet and in- offensive manner. Cllr Sargeant was a keen Don-


caster Rovers supporter and was a skilled sportsman in his youth, playing for Sheffield Wednesday’s juniors and cricket for his county boys’ team. After hewas made redundant, he


set up a window-cleaning business and in retirement he enjoyed pho- tography, birdwatching and writ- ing poetry. The funeral details had not been announced at the time of going to press.  Obituaries, page 36


News Assault case


A TEENAGER found drunk and disorderly in Maidstone has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months. Connor Houston (18) of Dorset


Way, Maidstone, admitted being drunk and disorderly in Bank Street on February 28, and assault- ing a police officer. Mid Kent magistrates ordered Houston to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay a £100 fine, £75 compensation, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Fire in loft


FIREFIGHTERS were called to a small fire in the roof space of a do- mestic building used as an office and storage space in Salts Avenue, Maidstone. The fire is believed to have been caused by embers from a nearby bonfire.
