All eyes are now on the county council elections next year to see where the Lib Dems might pick up seats or if UKIP can cause an upset.

MP stays positive

LOCALMPHelen Grant has taken an optimistic view of the elections on May 5. Despite her party losing two bor-

ough council seats, the Conserva- tives are still the largest party and the council remains under no over- all control. Mrs Grant said: “Our team in Maidstone did very well indeed in the face of a traditionally difficult phase of the electoral cycle. “We won the popular vote with

33% beating the Lib Dems by a full six points and we are still the largest party at Maidstone Borough Council. “Matt Scott’s victory in the PCC election was decisive and I very much look forward to working with him on a number of ongoing

initiatives including Operation Stack and our local rural speeding campaign in particular.” PCC election result, page 23

The figures behind the polls

MAIDSTONE operates a system where one third of its members are elected each year. There is a break in one of the four years for the Kent County Council polls. Many of the wards have more than one member and, this year,

there were 19 seats up for grabs. There are 26 wards in the Maid- stone borough. In those contests, 95 candidates stood with the Con- servatives, Greens, and Liberal Democrats fighting each one while Labour fielded candidates in all but two. UKIP fought in 14 wards while there were five independents and two English Democrats. The total number of votes cast was 31,979 meaning a turnout of

33.9%, which most observers would consider better than average but less than half of the number expected at a general election.
