AGR are sad to announce that Roly Cockman, former Chief Executive of AGR has passed away. He was 87 years old. Roly will forever be remembered as the first Chief Executive as the Standing Conference of Employers of Graduates (SCOEG) became the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR).
Carl Gilleard Former Chief Executive, AGR The name Roly Cockman is synonymous with the solid foundations on which the association is founded together with the high regard that it has earned with all the key players in the graduate recruitment world - government, universities, employers and agencies. He was AGR’s first ever chief executive and it was no mean feat to justify the investment that member organisations made at the time.

On a personal note, Roly was very supportive when I was appointed Chief Executive to succeed him following his retirement in 1998. We worked together for three months to ensure a smooth handover and during that time I was able to see at first hand Roly’s total commitment to and deep affection for the association. I also witnessed his consummate skills as an organiser, in particular his attention to detail, which I quickly realised was essential to ensure a
trouble-free annual conference. I’ll always remember Roly’s reaction when, encouraged by others, I called to ask if he thought I could fill his shoes. His reply was short and sweet, “Carl, you’ve made my day”. The rest, as they say, is history but my life could have been so different had he responded less positively.
Shortly after his retirement he was awarded an OBE for services to graduate recruitment and he confided in me that
