What did you enjoy most in designing this room? The room all came together upon finding and securing the beautiful, interesting, and colorful rug. I am thankful to Stark for the loan.

Did you encounter any challenges in designing this room? It is always a challenge to find pieces that are interesting and play well together, but that is part of the fun too.

Each designer has his or her own personality and style. How does your creative voice shine through?

I like a combination of contemporary and antiques but most of all, I like a room to seem inviting and not off-putting or too precious. After all, people need to live in the space. The upholstered pieces are all in indoor-outdoor fabric so children and pets can climb all over the furniture and a sponge and soap and water will clean up anything.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as an interior designer? I love working with my clients and making their living or working spaces a pleasure for them to be in and live with. I have several clients that I have worked with over the past 30 years and we continue to update or do a new house. It is very rewarding to have clients continue to work with me and become almost a part of the family.

What inspired you in designing this room? A breakfast room is something that we haven’t done together yet. Breakfast rooms tend to be overlooked or treated as an afterthought, yet they have the potential to be such great spaces. Any place that you enjoy your morning coffee or share a family meal should be beautiful.

What is your favorite aspect or element of this room and why? We love the wall of windows, which makes one feel as though the room is open to the outdoors.

Did you take a more technical or artistic approach in designing this space? Of course the function of the room guides us, but I would say our approach is more artistic.

What is unique about your design? What did you enjoy most in designing this room? The most unique feature of the room is the large map of 18th-century London, framed in sections, which takes up most of the main wall. It’s a great statement piece and something that has special meaning to us.

DESIGN HOUSE 2016

Beth Ann lived in London and I used to travel there regularly when I worked at Christie’s so it is a city that we both love.

Did you encounter any challenges in designing this room? YES. The breakfast room is open to both the kitchen and the living room, so we had to be conscious of the flow between the spaces. Another concern was the color of the trim and the kitchen cabinets—a drab-looking cream. We were thrilled when the homeowners agreed to paint the kitchen cabinets white. It completely freshened up the space and worked well with the black and white design scheme we chose for the breakfast room.

Each designer has his or her own personality and style. How does your creative voice shine through? We both like a mix of the traditional and the modern. We paired a hand-carved and weathered farm table with a sleek light fixture and curtain fabric with a geometric pattern.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as an interior designer? Seeing your clients’ reactions to their new spaces. We feel really lucky to love our jobs so much.

What inspired you in designing this room? It was fun to take on a different room and its unique apects, especially the bright red washer and dryer in the Laundry Room.

What is your favorite aspect or element of this room and why? The built-in bench that allowed me to layer fabrics and textures.

Did you take a more technical or artistic approach in designing this space? Artistic but fun.

What is unique about your design? I always think outside the given purpose or function of any room.

What did you enjoy most in designing this room? I enjoyed the idea of bringing a bland beige room to life.

Did you encounter any challenges in designing this room? I debated what would make more of a statement in this room: wallpaper versus paint. I considered using a dark color paint, but the wallpaper just worked so much better in the space.

Each designer has his or her own personality and style. How does your creative voice shine through?

Always adding an unexpected element and creating beautiful spaces.
