What inspired you in designing this room? The genesis of my inspiration came from the architecture of this American-Georgian home. I love the characteristics of this style which is simply…stately, classical and symmetrical. My interior design approach translated beautifully with all of these attributes!
What is your favorite aspect or element of this room and why? I am quite fond of the foyer’s architectural bones, great scale and classical proportions. I knew right away that this space had a lot of potential and could be enhanced with the right paint color, discreet textiles, textures and furnishings.
Did you take a more technical or artistic approach in designing this space? Artistic approach.
What is unique about your design?
The foyer tends to be the main artery of the house. I wanted it to set the tone, but at the same time not offend the adjoining rooms. I wanted to make a bold statement with life-size, classical sculpture juxtaposed with modern art while balancing other furnishings with a thoughtful, minimalist approach. In this case, “being spare is more.”
What did you enjoy most in designing this room? I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating, brainstorming, defining and editing with my mother on this design project.
Did you encounter any challenges in designing this room? There is always a bit of a challenge in defining all of the perfect elements in any design. There are just too many wonderful combinations to choose from. So then ensues the dreadful editing session.
Each designer has his or her own personality and style. How does your creative voice shine through? It is hard to have a single voice when my mother and I design together because we have such deep-rooted styles and tastes. I have an exceptional mentor.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as an interior designer? The design process can be a very daunting task for most clients. So, the most rewarding aspect as an interior designer is making my clients happy. It is so satisfying, and a great sense of accomplishment.

the space. I immediately envisioned this foyer being transformed into a field of chalk-white color with classic black accents, distinctive fine art, sculpture and furniture cohesively mixed.
Did you take a more technical or artistic approach in designing this space? Artistic approach.
What is unique about your design? The Entrance Foyer is always your first impression upon entering a home. You want to make it dramatic and interesting as a prelude to what follows. I wanted to combine a distinguished mix of classical, modern, and antique pieces collectively creating a beautiful and timeless interior.
What did you enjoy most in designing this room? Collaborating with my daughter, Heidi, on this project and seeing how seamlessly our thought and design process merged in creating the entire space. Makes a mother smile!
Did you encounter any challenges in designing this room? Actually there were no big challenges in this project. Once you have your creative design in your mind and on paper, you polish and refine it, then edit, edit and reedit until you feel you’ve got it just right!
Each designer has his or her own personality and style. How does your creative voice shine through? While we all approach things differently, working with your daughter is easy when you both fundamentally share the same philosophy and artistic values. Amazingly, our styles are very much alike.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as an interior designer? The most rewarding aspect of interior design is creating a beautiful, comfortable, and inspiring residence that fulfills the needs and the lifestyle of your clients.
