The Great Pacific Northwest YOUR FISHING REPORTS • STORIES & EDUCATION FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND COAST OF OREGON

Charleston, OR. ~ Happy May everyone! T e weather has been good, and then unsettled, and then good again, and then, well you get the idea. When the good days are here, the fi sh abound with limits caught in the bay and all the way down to the glass house here in southern Oregon. Sharkys Charters has been lay- ing a beating on the bay rockfi sh even in the bad weather. Sharkys has been bringing in numbers of blue striped Pacifi c perch along with rockfi sh and lingcod although the numbers of perch are defi nitely starting to decline from what we saw not that long ago. Crabbing in the bay remains so so, move that gear around and don’t stay in one spot if you’re not catching ‘em. Crabbing in the ocean is somewhat better but not great, try off of Whiskey Run beach, that’s where we have been hearing the best scores. Speak- ing of Whiskey Run beach there are still pink fi nned perch being

caught but not in the huge num- bers we were seeing a while ago. In fact, along all the beaches up to and including Horsfall re- ports of perch numbers are get- ting smaller. Now, don’t think that means meager or no numbers be- cause there are still LOTS of fi sh being caught just not in the astronomical numbers we were seeing. T at being said there are just those days when the fi sh

couldn’t care

less about what’s on the end of your line, aſt er all that’s why it’s called

fi shing

and not “catching”. Remember that a lot of the rock- fi sh that are being caught in the ocean are being hooked close to surface, particularly the black

and women scoring big off the north jetty(Coos Bay, OR). Big plastics and large herring will do the trick and don’t forget to use

rockfi sh. Make sure you have light tackle and gear with you for the days when the bite just isn’t far below surface. Lingcod are defi nitely coming back into the bay with a few bank fi shermen

smaller to medium jigs as the large heavy ones sink too fast and lodge in the rocks. I was on the north jetty last week and didn’t fare too well, I knew the tides were all wrong but the weather was per- fect and it was a great excuse to leave the shop and do some “research”.

While the bite was slow I did catch a couple sea critters

and one of them was a

species I had not caught before. It turns out the stoutly built rock- fi sh with a yellowish/olive skin ... continued on page 17

JOKES & Humor # 6

In a small town, there were two friars. They were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small fl orist shop to raise funds.

Since everyone liked to buy

fl owers from the friars, a rival fl o- rist across town thought this was unfair. He asked them to close down, but they would not.

He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him.

So the rival fl orist hired Hugh, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to “persuade” them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he’d be back if they didn’t close up shop.

Terrifi ed, they did so, proving that Hugh, and only Hugh, can prevent fl orist friars.
