Annual Spring Guide 2016

Sonoma County, CA. ~ Sue (Shreve) Janssen was raised an only child in Kansas. She could only imagine the rich interna-

Janssen.

Bill had been sent to Vietnam through Kansas State Universi- ty as an agricultural economist with USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Develop- ment.

They married in 1967,

before the Tet Offensive, one of the larg- est military campaigns

of the Viet- nam War. For safety reasons, de- pendents couldn’t live in Vietnam during the war, so Sue lived in Tai- pei, Taiwan for over a year.

She

had a car there and

traveled freely throughout the island, learning to communicate effectively with the locals with- out a common language. Their children from prior marriages remained in the States with oth- er parents and grandparents be- cause the court ruled that “God didn’t live west of California.” In the early 1970s, Sue joined Bill in Saigon, a city she de- scribed as “terrifying” dur- ing the war, but she learned to shelve the constant danger in the back of her mind. Bill had lived there before and had confi dence in the Vietnamese people who worked for him. They seemed to “have his back,” and advised him of where he should/should not be working on any given day. Living in a war zone, Sue reported that she didn’t notice the level of physical tension it created until they would take a leave, at which time she could visibly feel her body relax. ed, they were off on another adventure: to Jakarta, Indonesia with USAID for three years. Sue found the Indonesian peo- ple to be “delightful” and they had excellent U.S. government support services. To keep busy, Sue offered painting lessons in her home; she had worked for Hallmark Greeting Cards in Kansas City and studied art in college. Sue also taught Bridge and English to the spouses of Bill’s coworkers during their stay in Jakarta. While she found it diffi cult to form friendships there, they had wonder- ful adventures and many fond memories of In- donesia, includ- ing trips around the

boat; and unlike their experience in Vietnam, they felt safe.

After Indone- sia, Sue and Bill moved

to Palo

Alto, California, so that Bill could complete a Master’s de- gree in Agricultural Econom- ics at Stanford. Three of their blended family of 8 children lived with them at this time; one was in high school and

two were in college. Bill was then offered a position in the Dominican Republic by US- AID, and off they went on an- other adventure for the next three years! In the Dominican Republic, Bill and Sue became BMW motorcycle buffs, and developed close friendships with other cyclists. From there, the couple was off to Tegucigal- pa, Honduras for three years, and developed more life-long friendships.

Their most memorable assign- ment was in New Deli, India, which Sue described as both “wonderful” and “fascinating,” because “once you think you have fi gured something out, you discover something else that disproves your original thinking!” Life in India is quite varied from location to loca- tion, and Sue found the caste system to be fascinating. The most memorable and endearing experience was that Sue and Bill adopted an Indian child, Lalita, while living in New Deli, which is a story in itself. Lalita was living with a group of six prostitutes, and no one would admit being her mother to avoid ruining their opportu- nities to fi nd a husband. When Sue noticed this tiny, malnour- ished child under a bush out- side her home while one of the

women, who was trained as a masseuse, came to their house, Sue brought her inside and fed her.

Later, one of the women brought Lalita to their house with a high fever and asked them to help. The Janssens took her in, and when Bill was given his next assignment in Cairo, Egypt, Lalita went to a boarding
