“pretreatment” strategies, freezing frost and light snow melts on contact, and when the snow does start to pile up, it is easier for plows to peel off of the pavement. Brine alone or blended with calcium or magnesium chloride are frequently used to help “de-ice” the road after the snow has fallen. Liquid deicers keep roads clear and drivers

safe, but the decision to use them comes at a price. Liquids are often perceived to cause more widespread corrosion to vehicles and infrastructure, prompting cries for action from the public and requiring additional maintenance and accelerated depreciation of snowfighting fleets and infrastructure.

CORROSION COSTS IMPACT EVERYBODY Te cost of chloride deicer-induced

corrosion is no small problem. According to the US Geological Service, over 21 million tons of salt was bought in 2014 to treat roads and bridges in the United States, causing an estimated $13 billion dollars in direct corrosion damages. Unrecorded volumes of

magnesium chloride and calcium chloride were also applied to snowy roads. A collection of peer-reviewed research has

found that the cost of corrosion damage to the trucking industry and other commercial vehicles is estimated to be particularly high: one ton of chloride inflicts $2,517 in collective damage to the commercial vehicles exposed. A full $1,600 of this damage is attributed to additional repair and maintenance costs caused by chloride-induced corrosion; commercial

vehicles suffer another $917 of accelerated vehicle depreciation due to chloride exposure. Tese costs manifest themselves in higher

maintenance and replacement rates, shrinking the bottom line for the trucking industry and raising costs for the end consumer. Te indirect costs of corrosion have been

estimated to be 10 times greater than those above, and are often incurred as trucking fleet maintenance, private vehicle depreciation,
