out in real life. Handing over a horse, or any kind of animal, to a “rescue” organization might not be what it seems at first blush. There are many legitimate rescue organizations out there that do good work, but there are also scoundrels out there whose modus operandi is to pose as “animal res- cuers” (even if they aren’t soliciting donations) and take advantage of horse owners who are in some kind of a bind. The moral of this story is threefold. First, always


do your homework: investigate any so-called res- cue organization and make sure you visit their fa- cility and ask for references (and actually check the references!) Search the internet and the commu- nity local to the rescuers and try to find out if they are in the “business” of selling horses: do they have ads up at the feed store? Do they sell at the local livestock auction? How can they afford to care for the horses they rescue? How many of the horses

Second, get a written contract and make sure you understand what it says and agree to its terms. And third, if you have retained the right to reclaim your horse, then make sure you have some kind of visitation rights and can send someone to check on your horse from time to time.

This is also a good time for your horses to have their annual check up including a base line blood test. Awareness of your horse’s physical condition is important.
