Referee Exchange

Referee Manager at the Irish FA Lee Tavinder noted “It’s fantastic to be able to work with the Milk Cup and welcome our colleagues from the FA. In the last few years the Dale Farm Milk Cup has been a great partner in terms of referee development and the majority of the referees at the tournament are part of our development groups. This is the first year where we will be working with The FA in an official partnership exchange and this opens up exciting opportunities for the visiting officials, and our officials who will travel to England later in the year. The standard of football in the tournament offers a challenge for our domestic and visiting officials and we look forward to continuing to work with the competition and thank the DFMC for their continued support.”

“On behalf of the Football Association, can I thank you for inviting us to send a team of match officials to this year’s Dale Farm Milk Cup.

As you know, we were delighted to accept and recognise that this gives the Referees a terrific opportunity to participate in a superb tournament environment under the watchful eye of some expert coaching and support. After some consultation with our regional coach network we selected referees, Joe Starkie, Tom Reeves and Chris Darling.

Because of it’s importance we will also send one of our FA Referee Coaches to the tournament and an FA National Referee Manager will make a brief visit for a couple of days during the week, can I take this opportunity in wishing the Dale Farm Milk Cup every success and hope we all can enjoy a great week of entertaining football.”

CHRIS DARLING

Cambridgeshire FA I started refereeing in February 2010 at the age of 15 and began officiating on local colts and centre of excellence leagues around Cambridge before progressing on to adult football when I was 17 after I stopped playing. I took up the whistle through seeing a local advert and saw this as something to do over a school half term. I am currently a level four referee officiating on the Midland Counties East Pool and the FA’s Contributory leagues. To date my career highlight has been being assistant referee on an end of season friendly between Cambridge United and West Ham United in 2012. I really enjoy visiting new grounds, working with new colleagues and contributing to hopefully an exciting game of football for the crowd and public to enjoy. My other sporting interests are in long distance running, athletics and triathlon. Currently I am studying Physical Education and School Sport at Sheffield Hallam University to be a PE teacher and I hope to graduate next summer. An interesting fact about me is that I beat Paula Radcliffe in her farewell to London marathon in 2015. I believe that talent alone isn’t enough unless present with hard work and dedication.

JOE STARKIE

West Riding FA 22 years old - Level 4 referee - Vice President of Leeds Referees Association. I have been refereeing since I qualified when I was 14 after previously playing for a few of my local junior sides. I have a degree in Business Management and I am currently studying a PGCE at Leeds Beckett University. I'm also a qualified football coach and have worked as a coach for the Leeds United Foundation since I was 16. As a part of the West Riding School of Excellence and Level 4 National Development Group, I have been fortunate enough to be selected to represent the WRCFA at a number of international youth tournaments at St George's Park and Warwick University. The highlight being selected by County to officiate at the Iber Cup which was held in Lisbon in 2012. I was fortunate enough to be appointed as assistant referee in the U15’s final between Athletico Madrid and Real Betis in front of a crowd of around 3000 people, which was quite the experience! I am extremely thankful for and really looking forward to the opportunity to officiate at one of the world’s most prestigious youth tournaments.

TOM REEVES Birmingham FA

I am a 22 year old, Physical Education Teacher from Coventry, England. I qualified as a level 7 referee on the 19th November 2009 and have since achieved three successful promotions to the status of level 4 and have been invited onto the National Referees Development Programme. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a referee and have been involved in officiating games in the early rounds of the English FA cup, international tournaments around the UK/Europe and also various cup finals at stadiums such as St Andrews, The Ricoh Arena and Hillsborough. I feel honoured and privileged to represent the FA at this year’s prestigious Milk Cup in Northern Ireland and was delighted to find out that I was selected to officiate at this tournament which attracts many teams from all around the world. I feel it will further develop my refereeing ability to help reach my aspirations to progress onto the professional game in the near future. I look forward to the week ahead and would like to wish everyone involved a successful and enjoyable tournament.
