The Collective dances their way to bronze

Atlantic By: Suzie Stever

The Collective finished third at CUC 2015

The Collective, a women’s masters team made up of women from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, placed third this year at the Canadian Ultimate Championships. The bronze marked the first medal for an Atlantic women’s team.

The Collective formed four years ago as a women’s competitive team that brought together women from across Atlantic Canada. In January 2015 the masters age women started to discuss putting in a team at CUC. The Collective provided an avenue to get the numbers needed for a team, since no single Atlantic area was able to put together the number of skilled ultimate players needed on their own.

There were certainly challenges along the way. The geographic challenges of travel meant that each province practiced on their own with the goal of coming together for CUC. Putting together a regional team also meant bringing together players that were skilled but play three distinctly different styles of Ultimate. Due to life events, and the reality that the women have busy lives to balance, many of the original

players identified for the roster were not able to attend CUC. This left The Collective with a smaller roster than intended, and led to the three provinces integrating into two lines with each player bringing the strength and expertise of their style of play to the line-up.

It was a true honour to play with The Collective at CUC 2015. Everyone was a team player and supported and encouraged the players on the field and everyone communicated and was engaged at all times in the game at hand. This was not a group of a few superstars with support players, but a true team of women that stepped up and played their best for each other. The bronze finish was a true testament to the growth and cohesion of the women on this team.

The women’s masters category provided a opportunity to play high level, spirited Ultimate and The Collective would like to thank the other teams that provided such fantastic games and challenged us every step of the way.

The junior open final at CUC was one of the m it all. The final point was scored by Toro’s Bre adjusted his run and layed out for the score an
