Regional Update - Summer 2015 T
oronto Parity League: A Nightmarish Success
Ontario By: Miriam Tingle
On Nov. 25, 2015 at noon the registration for TUC’s Discraft Parity League opened. Within minutes the waitlist was stacking up as players did their best to make it into what has become one of the Toronto Ultimate community’s most popular leagues. TPL is held weekly at Monarch Park Stadium under the bubble through the fall and the winter season. It is a 6-on-6 hat league where players sign up as individuals and are subject to changing rosters based on the performance of themselves and their teammates. It is statistically based where the captains of the teams trade and balance their teams in order to stay below their ‘salary cap.’ Teams track their players’ stats each week, and player-value rises and falls
based on offensive and defensive achievements. Put simply: TPL is a fantasy Frisbee league.
Kristie Ellis plays in the TPL and this is what she had to say: “The parity league is Frisbee on

She said, “you have people tracking your every move (successes or failures) and all of your stats are posted on a public forum. For those who dominate the league it can be glorious, for those at the bottom it can be daunting.”
Ellis elaborated, “For a new/less experienced player parity league can seem particularly intimidating. You can be worried about drops, throwaway and getting D-ed while constantly trying to gel with

new teammates or whole new teams. Parity is also an awesome opportunity to play with a wide range of players with lots of opportunities to learn and improve.”
Jamie Mott, general manager of the league, gave some insight into the inner workings and the administrative side of TPL. The values for each offensive achievement are: goal ($5,000), assist ($5,000), second Assist ($3,000). For each defensive achievement: block ($5,000). You have your salary deducted ($3,500) for each throw away and ($3,000) for each drop. A team has a further $5,000 added to the overall salary with a win.
As a GM, it is really a weekly struggle to get a win with the least stats possible. If you win, you are penalized with higher salaried players. If you lose, you risk not making playoffs. If your players do well, their salary increases making them harder to
