Canadian Ultimate Championships 2015 Winnipeg, Manitoba
This summer, Winnipeg hosted the 2015 Canadian Ultimate Championships and I attended the tournament as a fan on the sidelines. I have seen two other CUC tournaments in Winnipeg, both as a player, with Winnipeg General Strike in 2009, and as the coach of the 2005 Manitoba Junior team, MOFO.
Pulling up to the fields at Winnipeg’s Maple Grove Rugby Park brought back familiar memories of other spirited tournaments. I remember early wake-ups, cramming in to a van

filled with fast food wrappers and the first sight of the field in the morning; teams warming up, discs in the air. For me, these are memories of my glory days playing for Mothership at Queen’s University. CUC 2015 made it clear the golden age of Ultimate has only just begun.
In many ways, Canadian Ultimate is the same as it always has been. Teams have rituals and traditions. General Strike, for example, has always started the pre-game warm- up at ‘six-thirty,’ no matter what time it is. Players drag bags of gear
from field to field and eat bagels and bananas between games. The penultimate event of any ultimate tournament is a party, where teams display the true vibrant spirit of the community. Even after years in ‘retirement’ I see many familiar faces, former teammates, opponents and friends.
