ROWLANDS GAIN TRAINING PROVIDER STATUS
Rowlands Pharmacy has become the fi rst to have been accredited as an RPS Foundation Training Provider.
Committed to continuing the education and development of its pharmacists, Rowlands invests heavily in partnership working with Schools of Pharmacy across Great Britain, and has now launched the Rowlands Foundation programme for pharmacists entering the profession and during their early career.
August 2015 saw the fi rst cohort of 14 Rowlands pharmacists starting their Foundation Programme.
Kenny Black, Managing Director of Rowlands Pharmacy said, “As a business we are always keen to invest in education and development, and partnership working is key to the success of any programmes we develop and deliver. We believe the RPS vision of pharmacists being ‘the healthcare professional entrusted by patients to take care of their every pharmaceutical need’ aligns with Rowlands ethos of investing in our pharmacists and their teams to enable them to provide sustainable health and wellbeing services at the heart of their local community.”
Sandra Hutchinson, Learning and Development Manager at Rowlands Pharmacy added, “To ensure that we have a robust programme in place, we have invested in partnership working with our Foundation pharmacists through face to face development sessions, one to one support and peer support from our more experienced pharmacy managers and our Area managers. Through a blended learning approach, we will be utilising the online RPS tools, our own e-learning platform for accessible learning and educational discussion forums, RGU School of Pharmacy & Life Science for research support as well as building confi dence in consultation skills through links with CPPE.”

The re-brand comes as part of a £200million investment programme following the acquisition by the Bestway Group late last year. It sees the business commit to launching new and extended healthcare services over the coming months that will help alleviate pressure on the NHS by supporting communities to take care of their health and wellbeing with Well.
These include: Well Careplus - Partnering with Invatech Health, Well has launched
Careplus, which uses the Proactive Care System (PCS), to improve the lives of care home residents through supporting the administration of medication. PCS is the only proven UK system using barcode technology to enhance patient safety and allow care professionals to digitally manage resident medication. medication for each resident and can even alert staff to administration times.
Free blood pressure checks across all branches, with no appointment necessary customers can pop in and monitor their blood pressure. So far Well have delivered 1000’s of checks across the country, supporting early detection of high blood pressure which can lead to conditions such as cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Smoking Cessation – Well is working collaboratively with the NHS to grow this service across their branch network. In Stoke, for example, Well is working with one of the biggest private smoking cessation providers, who have been sub-commissioned by a number of Local Authorities across the country to provide NHS Smoking Cessation services. All branches in Stoke will now provide NHS Smoking Cessation services, and Well is also growing this service within the other areas across the country. This will signifi cantly increase market share and their ability to support customers to quit smoking.
Scottish pharmacy practice to inform delivery in Austria

A community pharmacist from Austria spent two months at Robert Gordon University (RGU) this autumn to gain experience of how pharmacy services are delivered in Scotland. Iris Reinisch spent time with the Univer- sity’s School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences in September and October to learn more about the development of community pharmacy practice in
the north-east.
The Austrian Government helped fund the visit which saw Iris learn from experts at RGU as well as spending time at NHS 24 and visiting community pharmacies in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

Miss Reinisch worked alongside RGU lecturers to learn more about their approach and methods to teach- ing and practicing pharmacy in the community.
