Rewards for long service
TWO Maidstone employees of South East Water who started working for the company 25 years ago have been recognised for their long service. Mick Bryant and Mike Masters
were among 17 staff presented with certificates and gift vouchers after clocking up either 25 or 40 years working in the water industry. Mick’s first job was an apprentice- ship as a garage mechanic before he moved to a farm at East Farleigh. He then got a labourer’s post at Mid Kent Water and has since worked in a number of roles, including water meter installations.
Now a distribution technician, Mick said: “Things are much more customer-focused, with new tech- nology converting our vans into mo- bile offices.”

Water started 32 years ago, when he became an apprentice plumber. He left in 1989 to become self-em- ployed, but work dried up as the re- cession hit so he returned. Now a leakage technician, Mike has seen some spectacular burst water pipe sights. In 1991 he got a call to Seven Mile Lane near East Peckham where the Roydon Hall Bends were being straightened by Kent County Council. He said: “It was a cartoon-like scene of a column of water 100 feet high flooding the entire site.” Paul Butler, managing director of South East Water, congratulated the men, saying: “Both Mick and Mike have shown, and continue to show, dedication to their job, their team and to the company. The water in- dustry has seen many changes but they both have taken it all in their stride.”

STUDENTS and staff at New Line Learning Academy, in Boughton Lane, Loose helped to collect hun- dreds of pounds for Children in Need with a range of fundraising activities. Pupils started the fun on Friday,
November 13 by donating £1 to wear something spotty to class. At lunchtime, there were various initiatives to help boost the amount,
including a popcorn stand, a bake sale and game to guess how many sweets in a jar. Principal David Elliott said: "It’s al-
ways great to see the students sup- port charity events such as Children in Need. They're really enthusiastic about running the activities and rais- ing as much money as they can for a fantastic cause."
