YALDING schoolgirl Georgia Gent has become the first female to sign up for Yalding and Laddingford Football Club. Georgia (11), from Oast Court, is
the eldest daughter of Angela and Martin Gent, and has played for a number of junior soccer clubs in the village during her time at Yalding Primary School, where she is in year 6. She started playing for fun at the village pre-school and went on to train with Sylvia Sadler, who ran a Saturday soccer club for several years at the Kintons. Georgia is the fourth player to
Big cat scheme
AN Amur leopard from a wildlife centre near Headcorn is playing a major role in a global breeding programme to re-establish the en- dangered big cat. Three-year-old Zeya, from The
Wildlife Heritage Foundation’s Big Cat Sanctuary, was airlifted to Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Amer- ica, as part of the Wildlife Vets In- ternational’s programme to increase numbers of the leopard, believed to be as low as 40 in the wild and 100 in captivity.
progress from Yalding and Laddingford FC’s soccer school and, having signed for the club, has been included in the club’s Weald of Kent League U12 squad. Manager Robert Smith said:
“This is just another indicator of how far YLFC has progressed in the last two seasons. “Everyone involved in the game
will know just how much the FA has put the emphasis on women’s and girls’ football and we are proud to be part of this.” Georgia trained with YLFC a few
times last season and impressed both the manager and the coaching
team of Simon Bentley and James Griffin Mr Smith said: “She is very quick and, despite her slender frame, is certainly not scared of putting a tackle in.” Georgia takes the club’s playing
squad to 18, split between the Crowborough and Weald of Kent leagues. As well as her football, Georgia
enjoys sailing with her father at Tonbridge Sailing Club, where she was placed second in the juniors this year. She also plays the piano. Georgia recently passed the Kent
Test and hopes to go to Invicta Grammar School next year.
Photos to feature in fundraising calendar
SNAPPERS in Yalding are to have their work included in a charity calendar. The Yalding Church Preserva-
tion Society (YCPS) ran a photo- graphic competition in 2014. Now, a selection of the best en- tries have been chosen to appear in a calendar for 2016 to raise money for work at the church. The YCPS has, in the past, con- tributed towards the repair of the lych gate and the medieval chest
and has recently committed to re- pairing the chancel window. There are more projects to come that will require ongoing fundraising. The A4 colour calendar is
priced at £7.50 with all profits going to YCPS funds. The cover photo features the impressive village sign, which stands in the High Street. Copies can be bought at the Village Tea Rooms, Yalding Post
Office or at the Yuletide Market on Saturday, December 5. Following the success of the
teddy parachute jump at this year’s church fete, which raised more than £1,000, the YCPS plans to repeat the event in 2016. It is also going to repeat the
tower dinner, where three cou- ples get the chance to dine al fresco at the top of the church tower on – hopefully – a balmy summer’s evening.
