Michigan MMEA created a new event, an Elementary Honors Choir. This choir was open to students in grades 3-6 and attracted over 120 students from around the state. The Michigan Mu- sic Advocacy Day was another successful event. Modeled after the NAfME Hill Day event, state music education lead- ership from MSVMA and MSBOA descended upon Michi- gan legislators with specific legislative asks concerning an elementary general music requirement and teacher certification.
Minnesota
The Music Makes Us Whole initiative was a collaborative effort by Minnesota Music Educators Association, Minneso- ta Public radio and Fast Horse (a media and public relations firm). This advocacy initiative was very successful and an example of collaborative work within various arts organiza- tions.
Nebraska NMEA has adopted a new strategic plan format structured to reflect the NAfME strategic plan. Highlights of the plan include creating a Music Education Summit and reviving the SMTE in Nebraska, reinstating a young teacher Leadership Symposium, and looking at viable options to expand student experiences in music.
North Dakota The NDMEA board is focusing on advocacy in their 2015 fall journal. Their Facebook group has continued to grow and overall response to the group has been very positive. This Facebook group has increased awareness of NDMEA and has promoted interstate networking.
Ohio
The Ohio Arts Council “Arts Day” 2015 was held last May. This event included an advocacy briefing, student perfor- mances, Governor’s awards, and legislative visits to every Ohio House and Senate office. Each legislator received “The Best of OMEA All-State” CD.
South Dakota Inspired by Eric Whitacre’s virtual choir, SDMEA created a similar experience in a Middle School Virtual Choir for the state of South Dakota. This low-cost, no-travel option for honor choir participation provided an opportunity for many middle school students to participate based on a recorded versus a live audition process.
This project also created a
partnership with high school and college students in a real world opportunity to apply video, audio editing and produc- ing skills and also a partnership with production profession- als who mentored the students in working on the production side of this project.
Wisconsin Wisconsin continues to be a leader in the Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance – Teaching with Inten- tion…Performing with Understanding. This model of music teaching will be featured at the NAfME In-service Confer- ence in Nashville in the fall of 2015.
As you can see, we are an active division in NAfME with a passion in promoting all that is great for music education. We should all be proud of our accomplishments while at the same time be diligent in our continued focus towards im- proving music education.
