New Leadership for NAfME Collegiate Chapter
in Michigan Angela Schmitt & Eliott Polot We are excited to introduce ourselves as the new state representatives for the Michigan Collegiate NAfME. Angela will serve a one-year term that began in May 2015 and will continue until May 2016. Elliot began in May 2015 and will continue until May 2017. We would like to take this op- portunity to thank John West from the University of Michigan for his service to NAfME Collegiate over the past two years and in particular we thank him for being the primary organizer for the March 2015 NAfME Collegiate Conference.
Angela is a junior at Grand Valley State Univer- sity where she is pursuing a degree in music edu- cation with an instrumental emphasis. She studies piano with performance honors under Dr. Helen Marlais. Angela is the pianist for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, is the President of the GVSU chapter of the National Association for Music Ed- ucation and is a member of the Mu Kappa Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Angela works as a member of the band staff at GVSU as well as a march- ing band instructor for the percussion section of the Jenison High School Marching Band. She will graduate in 2017 from the Frederick Meijer Hon- ors College with her degree in music education and will be passionately searching for a job as a director of a high school band before pursuing her graduate degrees in music education.
Elliot Polot is a sophomore at the University of Michigan, studying Instrumental Music Educa- tion, as well as Euphonium Performance under professor Fritz Kaenzig. A proud graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Elliot now plays in the Michigan Marching Band and various ensem- bles in the School of Music, Theater and Dance. Elliot works as a private lesson teacher, with five current students from the Ann Arbor area, and now serves on the board of MMEA as one of two collegiate representatives. He is using his role as NAfME Collegiate State Representative to con- nect music education students throughout the state of Michigan through social media. A mem- ber of the Epsilon chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sin- fonia, Elliot plans to graduate from the University

of Michigan in 2018 or 2019 and become a high school band director, as well as audition for eu- phonium openings as they arise.
We also have a new Advisor for NAfME Colle- giate. Dr. Colleen Conway from the University of Michigan took over as the new NAfME Collegiate Advisor in May 2015. She had previously served the Michigan Music Education Association as the Advisor for the Society for Music Teacher Educa- tion for the past 13 years. Dr. Conway’s scholarly interests include: preservice music teacher educa- tion, beginning teacher mentoring and induction, experienced teacher professional development, qualitative research, and the designing of musi- cianship focused curriculum and assessment. She has published over 80 articles, 10 book chapters and six books on these topics.
We look forward to meeting you at the Michigan Music Conference. This year we will have three sessions specifically for college students (Titles and presenters listed below) and for the first time there will be a Reception Sponsored by MMEA that is just for college students (Friday night at 7 PM). At the reception there will be a brief meet- ing where an election will be held for the NAfME Collegiate representative position that will be open for a term of May 2016-May 2018. Those interested in running for this position should send an email stating their interest and a brief para- graph describing their qualifications to Angela Schmitt (
schmitta@mail.gvsu.edu) by December 15, 2015).
