example, or how folk music is generated and spread. And where were other world music traditions in the “music his- tory” assessment? Whose history were we privileging?


The discussion was fascinating, and occasionally heated. We ended up including a broader definition of music histo- ry in the assessment. The experience altered what I under- stood as music history forever--and changed my teaching. It also made me wary of rigidly designating certain skills and knowledge as “best” or “essential.”


Is there room for change, growth and diverse method- ologies in curriculum and assessment? How does stan- dardizing alter that?


Nancy Flanagan spent 31 years as a K-12 Music specialist in the Hartland, Michigan schools. She was named Michi- gan Teacher of the Year in 1993, and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She served as Teacher in Residence with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, working on teacher leadership and education reform. Her blog, Teacher in a Strange Land, is featured on Education Week’s Teacher division. She served as Electronic Media Co- ordinator for the Save Our Schools March, in July 2011—and currently teaches an online course, Teacher as Change Agent, for the Michigan Education Association.
