Moving Beyond the Undergraduate Curriculum – Navigating your Way Through the Busy Degree Facilitated by Angela Schmitt and Elliot Polot, NAfME Collegiate Representatives.
Geared towards college students, this interactive session will explore ways in which music education majors can design and implement their own opportunities to learn to teach so as to supplement the typical undergraduate curriculum. A panel of beginning teachers will share ways in which they worked as undergraduate students to fill in the gaps of the curriculum with teaching experiences in schools.
The Importance of Leadership in the Music Education Classroom Presented by Dr. James Borst, East Grand Rapids High School

NAfME Spring Conference
The NAfME collegiate spring conference will take place at Michigan State University on March 12, 2015. Geared towards college students, this conference will offer potential sessions on classroom management, resume and career building, gradu- ate programs and how to plan your future, and performance anxiety. Also, the annual reading band will be part of the pro- gram this year. The conference will tentatively be 10am to 4pm
and lunch will be provided. Angela Schmitt is the primary or- ganizer of the collegiate conference, so please don’t hesitate to contact her at
schmitta@mail.gvsu.edu with any questions you might have. We hope to have a great turn out!
Facebook/Twitter
Through social media, college students are among the most interconnected people in the world. Therefore, music educa- tion students, with their unique interests and growing needs, have never had an easier opportunity to be connected than now. That’s why as part of their service to NAfME Collegiate, El- liot and Angela are making an emphasis on social media. The NAfME Collegiate – State of Michigan Facebook page, cre- ated in May, 2011, is anticipated to have a lasting resurgence of activity in fall 2015, as chapter presidents will soon begin inviting as many music education students as possible from their respective schools to join the page. Elliot and Angela’s vision for this project is a virtual home where music education students all around Michigan can meet, share ideas, find jobs, and seek assistance with the age-old endeavors of music teach- ing. Moderators of the page will share photos and videos of Michigan music education students at work to help share ideas and keep students in touch. Similar to the Facebook page, a NAfME Collegiate – State of Michigan Twitter account will also be created. The hope is that Michigan music education students will soon be able to reach each other through social media as deeply and efficiently as they hope to reach their own students through music.
