Solent companies making it onto the Tech Track 100
Two companies from the Solent area made it into the latest Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 league table, an annual national compilation which ranks Britain’s top private tech (TMT) companies with the fastest- growing sales over the latest three years of accounts.
A typical Tech Track 100 company is generally owned and run by entrepreneurs, has between 20 and 200 staff with sales ranging from £5 million-£50m.
NewVoiceMedia
NewVoiceMedia, a Hampshire company founded in 2000 by Ashley Unitt and Richard Pickering, was named at 66th in the table. The company provides cloud technology that integrates telephony systems with existing company data to improve the performance of sales and support staff in contact centres.
With a staff of over 200 working with clients such as TNT, Parcelforce and Berry Bros & Rudd, the Basingstoke-based company says it has benefited from a general move towards cloud computing, especially from larger enterprises.
NewVoiceMedia has raised a total of £63m in funding since 2010, and under chief executive Jonathan Gale sales rose to £14.9m in 2015 (average 56%). It is predicted to gain further growth over the next five years as it has been estimated that the personal cloud market will have an annual compound growth rate of 33.1% to reach a staggering $89.9 billion – according to a
report entitled World Personal Cloud Market – Opportunities and Forecasts.
“There are many changes happening in the use of global technology with the workplace becoming less traditional and more virtual. The new changes are business led, as employers utilise personal cloud storage as solutions to work problems,” said the report.
Onecom
The second company representing the region in the national table is Onecom, a Fareham-based concern that came in at 79th. But its sales growth has been a model of consistency, with an appearance in the Top Tech table four times in the past five years.
The company’s proprietary software platform manages and monitors more than 200,000 mobile phone contracts on behalf of its customers, which include the NHS, the Williams Formula One team and Vue Cinemas.
The Hampshire business expanded in 2013 when Premier Telecom merged with £10m turnover sister company Business Phones Direct. Under founder and chief executive Darren Ridge, sales at the group reached £60.8m last year.
* Tech Track 100 was dominated by central London-based companies, among them top-placed Ve Interactive, an e-commerce technology developer. The league table is compiled annually by Oxford-based Fast Track, with an awards event in November and alumni dinners throughout the year.
BDO names top companies
Five Southampton companies feature in this year’s list of top 20 companies demonstrating sustained and impressive profit growth as part of accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP’s Central South Mid Market focus.
The five companies named are Southampton-based Trimline, Dyer & Butler Holdings and Reilly Holdings, and Eastleigh-based Lambert Brothers and Paultons Park.

Jane Mulholland, BDO partner, commented: “Interestingly, some of the most successful companies don’t come from the ‘dynamic’ sectors that might be expected to bring significant profit growth, but from more traditional industries such as civil engineering, manufacturing and logistics.
“In my experience, profitable growth is delivered by strong management teams who plan for all eventualities.”
