Solent Business Awards

2015

“We are delighted to be hosting the new Solent Business Awards bringing deserved recognition to the cream of Solent companies – some of the very finest, fastest- growing businesses in this very vibrant region,” said David Murray, founder and publisher of The Business Magazine at this inaugural and special gala evening.

The Solent Business Awards (SBA) has grown from and will build on the heritage of the Hampshire Business Awards, run successfully for the past 25 years as a one- county awards scheme, explained Murray.

Expanded to take in other parts of the Solent region – from Weymouth in the west to Chichester in the east – the SBA is now run by The Business Magazine, organisers of the flagship Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards for the past two decades.

Representatives of 31 finalists for the six major awards were among more than 200 guests at the prestigious evening staged at the Hilton in Southampton’s Ageas Bowl – “a magnificent venue that in its way symbolises the new optimism and confidence that pervades in the Solent region in 2015,” added Murray.

“Without a doubt, Southampton, Portsmouth, and Bournemouth are cities and towns that have much to shout about, and can see a bright future over the next five years or more. Winchester, Fareham and other parts of the region are also on a high as the economy improves and as key inward investment and city development projects roll out.

“Southampton is particularly buoyant. There’s a £3 billion investment programme – with £1.6b already committed. This will create 7,000 jobs in the next 10 years and 24,000 longer-term.”

Murray also paid particular tribute to the SBA’s founding category sponsors – NatWest, KPMG, Pitmans, James Cowper Kreston and the University of Southampton – for their engagement and support. “I would also like to thank Taylor Made Computer Solutions and the CBI for backing this first year of the SBA.”

‘Christening’ the new Solent Business Awards were two high- profile personalities. Lord Digby Jones, the renowned champion of business, spoke forthrightly and entertainingly, as ever, during the evening about his distinguished career both within the SME and corporate worlds, and international to governmental circles.

Presenter for the evening was Sally Taylor MBE, a name and face known to everyone in the region through her BBC South television broadcasting, newspaper column and charity work.

A donation of £2,000 was gathered for the SBA’s chosen charity, Naomi House & Jacksplace, which supports children and young adults with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.
