MIDDLE SCHOOL

OES IS RENOWNED for having among the best science research and service learning programs in the country. We are quickly becoming a national leader in creating a Pre-K through grade 12 mindfulness program as well. Mindfulness education has found particular focus in the Middle School under the direction of Cindy McEnroe, the Director of Counseling and the Academic Support Team at OES. Innovative programs in which Middle School faculty have trained and are piloting include Yoga Calm, MindUp (a Health and Wellness curriculum used in sixth and seventh grades), and HeartMath (a Health and Wellness curriculum used in eighth grade). A weekly time and space for mindfulness contemplation is also offered to students during the school year. These programs and others like them across campus illustrate OES’s commitment to a healthy education for each child: mind, body, and spirit.

UPPER SCHOOL

HISTORY CHAIR MIKE GWALTNEY’S GOVERNMENT, POLITICS, AND CITIZENSHIP class took their study of gun control out of the classroom and into the halls of government last year. In an impressive show of leadership and service to the community, 10 students attended a Portland City Council meeting. They presented a policy proposal which called for city action on gun control and for the city to take an affirmative position with the State of Oregon to enact state-wide gun control measures. Following this was a visit to the Oregon State Legislature to testify in the House on a gun control bill, meet with legislators sponsoring the bill, and meet with leaders of national and state advocacy groups. Examples like this can be distilled to a phrase often used but still powerfully true: At OES, students learn to use their power for good.
