BEHIND THE BAR AND OFF THE MARKET

DUSTIN DOYLE

by kevin plautz

Step into The Caliph at nightand you’ll most likely stumble upon San Diego’s very own 29-year old newlywed Dustin Doyle. The Rage Monthly spoke to Dustin about The Caliph and the man of his dreams.

Let’s start with you telling us a little about growing up here in San Diego. I was born here, at Grossmont Hospital, to

be specific and I grew up in Lakeside. I went to a private Christian school for the majority of elementary and high school and finished at El Capitan High, which is in the middle of Lakeside. How long have you been a bartender at The Caliph? I’ve been slinging liquor for five years, right here

at the wonderful Caliph Lounge! What’s the best thing about working there? Hands down, the real charm of The Caliph is in

the patrons. The eclectic crowd makes for a fun and warm environment that welcomes bargoers old and young, regular and new. What do your customers love most about the bar? The Caliph is all about the music and live en-

tertainment. We have performances every night from the patrons, singing their favorite karaoke classics, to our “Vegas-esque” lounge act, Blue Velvet, to the musical stylings of Kevin and Ria. It’s a special place made even better by the people inside and, of course, yours truly! Do you have a signature drink? I’m a big fan of a late-night White Russian…

Desperate times call for desperate measures, gurl. What’s new at The Caliph these days? The Caliph has recently revamped the karaoke

system, adding oversized screens and a massive database of over 70,000 songs. With one of the best sound systems in town, we are the hot spot for karaoke. Who doesn’t love a blacked-out rendition of, “Tiptoe Through the Tulips?” Tell us a little bit about the famous Sherman Mendoza, the owner of The Caliph. Sherman is a philanthropist and super gener-

ous. Proof of his sincerity is in his consistent giving to, among other groups, Being Alive, the Imperial Court and the Center. Any big events planned for the near future? The Caliph always has new and fun events cooking up for the future. With regard to festivals

and celebrations like Pride and St. Patrick’s Day, The Caliph should certainly be included in any fun-packed itinerary. Rumor has it you have a new husband... How long have you been together? Tim and I were married this past June, and

we’ve been together for eight years. He works as an educator in the creative and performing arts. Please, share an interesting story about your wedding... We all want to know details! Our wedding took place the same day the

Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. Several of the local news crews asked for permission to cover part of the wedding... While flattered, we ultimately opted out of the fanfare. To top it all off, our dog, Mimi, was the flower girl! What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I love my stay-cations, typically to Las Vegas or

Palm Springs. I may hit up a casino or two on the way, but who doesn’t like a guilty pleasure every now and then?

The Caliph is located at 3100 5th Avenue. For more informa- tion on what’s happening inside, go tothecaliph.com.
