The opera world, for many, can be one that is dif-


ficult to know. Lofty and unreachable some say, due partially to its history as entertainment solely for kings, queens and their courts. Others argue it’s a result of the insular nature of the world’s most vener- ated (and expensive) stages and the medium’s place- ment there. Certainly, it’s due in part as well, to the vastly expensive nature of staging the masterpieces most commonly offered. Thankfully, access is growing... due to the ever-


changing nature of the world’s monetary realities, but also because the medium is wisely evolving to meet those changes. It also owing in some respects, to a new class of opera stars who assert a purposeful mission to remain accessible themselves, both in performance and as personalities. Patricia Racette is one of that group. Through


tenacity and hard work, she has earned her place on those lofty stages. Though, to her credit, she has nev- er forgotten the world from which she came. Lucky for us, she and her wife Beth Clayton, an opera diva herself, are a part of not only the world’s community, but are members of our very own LGBT community.
