Texas dance pride. Joshua L. Peugh (25 toWatch inDance Magazine) and his troupewowed the 700 plus crowdwith three of hiswhimsicalwonders,WhiteDay, Slump, and Critics of the Morning Song. Something about thewind, themountains in the background, thewhole pastoral scene, supported Peugh’s light- handedwhimsical lyricism.

BODYTRAFFICalso performed Peugh’s ATrick of the Light earlier in the season, so itwas really a double Pillowdebut for this ris- ingDallas choreographer. The LosAngeles-based BODYTRAFFIClands inDallas through TITAS on Jan. 22 and through SPAHouston on Jan. 23


Jessica Lang is not fromTexas, butwe like to pretend she is, as she has been commissioned by TITAS andDallasMuseumof Art, and iswell known in the Lone Star state. Lang’s chamber ballet TheWanderer enjoyed a two-week run at the Pillow. Set to Schubert’s song cycle,Die schöneMüllerin, TheWanderer featured an outstanding performance byDallas native Steven LaBrie, who recently performed inDallasOpera’s La bohème.

showed us that he is still a dancemaker to reckonwith in his newwork,Under Fire, forCuba’sMalpasoDanceCompany, set to themelancholic songs ofGrandmaKelsey.Malpasomakes a Houston stop through SPAonApril 30.


But the Texas ties really go back towhen Pillowfounder Ted Shawn toured Texaswith hisMenDancers in 1937 and 1939. Evoking some cherished history, the all-maleMADBOOTS, directed byDallas native andBooker T alumJonathanCampbell andAustinDiaz, closed the festival alongwithMarthaGraham DanceCompany, nowheading into their 90th season.Dancing two provocativeworks, Beau and (SADBOYS),MADBOOTS is definitely a troupe towatch.Houston native andHSPVAgrad RobbieMoore delivered a standout performance in theworld premiere ofMADBOOTS’ (SADBOYS).


Daniil Simkin’s INTENSIOmade a big Pillowsplash: it drops intoHouston onNov. 6. and contains awonderful newballet by Dance Salad favoriteAnnabelle LopezOchoa. TITAS presents two PillowawardwinnerswithKyleAbrahamonOct 29-30 and Crystal Pite ofKidd Pivot onApril 21-22.


Andwhat a terrific showing of SouthernMethodistUniversity Meadows School of theArtswe had this summer,withDark Circlesmembers and current SMUstudentsEmilyBernet and SalvatoreBonilla alongwith SMUalumsAlexKarigan Farrior, DexterGreen,KelseyRohr and Peugh. Two SMUgrads appearedwith theMarthaGrahamDanceCompany: apprentice Dani Stinger, aHouston native and formermember ofAdDeum DanceCompany, and companymember LaurenNewman,who danced the role of Lilith inGraham’s 1958 satiric romp, EmbattledGarden. SMUMeadows School of theArts presents Graham’s 1944masterwork Appalachian Spring,withAaron Copland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning score played live, onMay 11 at WinspearOperaHouse as part of their 23rd annualGala benefit concert.
