... privacy and data security are now standing items on the corporate risk agenda of all businesses, regardless of sector

John Warchus, a partner in the commercial and technology team, talks about one of the key growth sectors in the region: technology and IT. Over the past 25 years, Warchus has worked with major suppliers and users of technology including Fujitsu, EDS, G4S and asos.com.

UK tech growth activity is at its highest for almost a decade. 98% of the UK‘s digital tech companies are small businesses, 74% of which are based outside of central London with strong clusters arising in west London, Brighton and Bournemouth. Digital employment is set to grow by 5.4% by 2020. Here Warchus summarises the key issues and opportunities facing his clients today.

Employment

By 2020 the sector is forecast to grow at 1.63% per annum, nearly twice as fast as the UK average. There is a demand for high-level technical skills, in particular to develop products and services to meet the needs of the fast- moving nature of the technology and IT sector. This includes knowledge of the most up-to-date programming languages and IT trends, such as cloud computing.

Cyber security

Currently there are not enough experts to counteract more advanced cyber attacks. There is also an increase in opportunities for information security officers and information risk managers, who manage threats posed to a business. Large organisations, the Government and social media companies, such as Facebook and Twitter, are all keen to employ cyber experts.

Data protection and privacy

For larger technology companies securing and protecting data are key competitive differentiators, while in a more general sense, privacy and data security are now standing items on the corporate risk agenda of all businesses, regardless of sector. Lax security and procedures can mean:

- losing commercially-sensitive information

- incurring swingeing fines from the Information Commissioner‘s Office

- or, worst of all, a great loss THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – SOLENT & SOUTH CENTRAL – OCTOBER 2015 www.businessmag.co.uk John Warchus

of reputation and share price value over a major data breach.

Big data

Big data is the broad term relating to the massive potential benefits to businesses from being able to make better key decisions based on relevant, accurate data. While the potential is vast, the current fear is that only large companies may have the financial and technical resources to harness and evaluate big data, while SMEs may not. Due to this there is a risk that they may lose out in future.
