Make your summer days even more fun with this cheerful sunshade and beach bag.

Beach umbrella Who said the nice things must stay

at home when you set off for the seaside? Use the frame of an old umbrella to put your personal stamp on the beach.

Difficulty: intermediate Time: half a day

You will need fabric in two contrasting prints matching coloured sewing thread fringing (optional)

To make 1 Remove the cover from the umbrella. Measure one of the cover panels and draft a pattern on paper. Add 1,5cm seam allowances and a 3cm hem allowance at the bottom edge of each panel. Use the pattern to calculate the amount of fabric necessary for the new cover. 2 Cut the panels from the fabric using the paper pattern as template. Pin and sew the panels, right sides

together. Next, press and sew a 1,5cm- wide double hem along the outer edge of the cover. Finally, pin and sew the fringe to the right side of the cover, along the outer hem (if using). 3 Unpick the plastic spine stoppers from the original cover and sew these into position on the new cover. Place the cover on the umbrella frame and hand sew the seam allowance of each panel to its corresponding spine halfway down the length.

All-in-one bag

The beach is not the same without a book, bottle of sunscreen and a tube of lip gloss. Make a bag to match your beach umbrella for these items and many more.
