Royal inauguration of biomass-fi red power plant

on 28 August, 2015. The King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, and Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria honoured the occasion with their presence and symbolically fed forest residue to the fuel feed system. The offi cial inauguration was followed by open doors at the power plant, where the public could visit the plant and learn about its operation.

he inauguration of Oskarshamn Energi’s new biomass-fi red power plant was held

In his speech, the King linked the power plant to local action on combating climate change and the upcoming climate meeting in Paris. He cited the use of forest residue as a good example of utilising something that would otherwise go to waste. “As the leading local energy provider, it is of great importance to us to be able to provide environmentally-friendly heat and electricity to our customers. This is possible due to this new power plant. The sunny inauguration

performed by His Majesty the King of Sweden was a really great experience,” stated Jöns Wahlström, Managing Director of Oskarshamn Energi

“This project has been a technical success and we have been able to combine the know- how of many different Valmet teams. This plant is an excellent representation of our energy production technologies, as well as environmental and automation solutions, and will serve as an important reference facility also

for future projects,” confi rmed Bertel Karlstedt, President of Valmet’s Pulp and Energy business line.

Major investment at Port of Gothenburg

A new logistics park is in the early stages of construction beside Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg, the largest in the Nordic region. One million square metres in size, the Port of Gothenburg Logistics Park is expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs and address a

shortage of land for logistics and distribution close to the port. “This is an enormous invest- ment and a golden opportunity for every company looking to establish a warehouse directly be- side the largest port in Scandina- via,” said Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive.

More Enplus ® certifi cates in Spain

By the end of July, 2015, the year had seen nine more Spanish manufacturers certifi ed with the ENplus® seal. These new holders bring the total number of certifi cates issued for factories to 30 and for traders to 15, which meets the forecasts put forward for this year by AVEBIOM, the body designated by the European Pellet Council to develop the quality certifi cation system for domestic wood pellets in Spain. However, given that several

more enterprises are in the pro- cess of implementing the system, the number of certifi cations is forecast to increase before the end of the year. One signifi cant point that AVE- BIOM highlights is that the new production facilities have decided to produce ENplus® certifi ed pellets, as well as other biofuels such as quality chips, from the outset so that they can reach thermal energy consumers that are not just domestic users.

This trend confi rms the rapid growth being seen in the Spanish solid biofuels market for thermal uses. In terms of pellets, the production capacity that will be installed by the end of the year will be nearly 1,340,000 t/year, spread out over 60 plants. Alto- gether, the factories that have been certifi ed in 2014 provide over 25,000 t/year of produc- tion capacity and production of over 475,000 tonnes of pellets is forecast for this year.

The new logistics park will

have fi ve companies as prop- erty owners – the Gothenburg Port Authority, NCC, Prologis, Eklandia and Bockasjö. The park is located directly adjacent to the port’s freight terminals on Hisingen in Gothenburg. “Logistics is a prime business

sector for Gothenburg and it cre- ates large numbers of jobs in our region. The Port of Gothenburg Logistics Park will reinforce our position as the logistics capital of Sweden,” concluded Magnus Kårestedt.

It is planned to complete the whole park by around 2025.

Forest thinnings into natural gas

In Auburn, California, a new technology developed by Canadian fi rm G4 Insights for converting wood waste and small trees from forest thinning projects into renewable natural gas has been demonstrated for the fi rst time.

Placer County provided G4 with forestry waste from Tahoe National Forest and in its fi rst public demonstration, G4 used gas produced on site to fuel an unmodifi ed Placer County truck. G4 principal Matt Babicki said, “This project demonstrates the potential for G4 PyroCatalytic Hydrogenation technology to transform forestry waste into high value, low carbon fuel and support forestry communities with long-term jobs to collect biomass and operate G4 renewable natural gas plants”.
