arlier this year, European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen in charge of Jobs, Growth, Investment and Com- petitiveness attended the fi rst meeting of the ‘Bioeconomy’ working group of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’. The title of the event was ‘Where’s the Bioeconomy: update your knowledge’ and its purpose was to assess the actual and potential contribution of the European bioeconomy sector in efforts towards achieving a more energy-effi cient, resource-effi cient and sustainable EU. Chaired by Finnish politician Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, MEP, she highlighted the remarkable size of bioeconomy-related business in the European economy, with an annual turnover of more than two trillion Euros. Within the Horizon 2020 program, the funds allocated to the bioeconomy represent an investment of four and a half billion Euros, with further large contributions from industry.

Jyrki Katainen stressed that if Europe manages to ensure a competi- tive and stable market for the bio-based economy, this will create the basis and the incentives to expand on a reliable business model. Yet, a level-playing fi eld, as well as clear and comprehensive regulation, must be ensured. He emphasised that the high environmental standards that Europe has put in place don’t have to be seen as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to step up innovative solutions and job creation. The new European Bioeconomy Alliance (EBA) has also pleaded for clear and predictable policy frameworks in order to improve competi- tiveness and attract further investments in the bioeconomy. EBA’s vision is to help establish a more competitive, innovative, en- ergy-secure and sustainable Europe, separating economic growth from reliance on imported fossil sources, resource depletion and environ- mental impact. It fully supports both the European Commission’s work on developing an EU bioeconomy and has entered into an informal alliance with interested parties such as the Confederation of European Forest Owners, the European Renewable Ethanol Producers Association and the Forest-based Sector Technology Platform, which are concerned with the development of forest-based bioenergy and bioproducts. In view of the growth in new applications for forest-based bioprod- ucts, the Publisher of Forest Bioenergy Review is pleased to announce that news from this sector will be included as a regular feature from now on (see page 14 of this issue).
