EQUIPMENT REVIEW INDUSTRY NEWS Improved knuckleboom loaders A

robust series of knuckleboom loaders from Tigercat have been relaunched

with a number of notable improvements, including the addition of a Tigercat FPT Tier 4f power plant and a totally redesigned cabin.

The new 234B and T234B loaders are now equipped with the Tigercat FPT N45 engine, delivering 168 hp. The four- cylinder engine was chosen because it is very well-matched to the duty cycle of the 234 series loaders, enhancing fuel efficiency, reducing DEF consumption and improving the performance of the after-treatment components. Lifting force and boom speed are unaffected by the engine change and operators are reporting the same high performance characteristics that they have come to expect from the 234.

“Running a Tier 4 final engine requires the use of Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) with DEF injection in the exhaust system,” explained Lodovico Sinchetto, Tigercat diesel engine systems engineer. “The SCR needs a minimum average operating temperature. Running a 4,5 litre four-cylinder engine will result in a higher duty cycle, ensuring that the exhaust gas temperature is always optimal for the SCR, while delivering the same or better productivity. An exhaust flap positioned just after the turbocharger provides active control of the exhaust temperatures even at low idle, allowing a total continuous idle time up to nine hours.” The totally redesigned operator’s station has a significantly improved climate control system, together with a number of additional features to

improve the operator experience. The new heavy duty suspension seat is physically wider and equipped with heating and cooling as standard. The seat also has improved adjustability and many of the frequently- used rocker switches have been repositioned and are now integrated into the armrest- mounted joystick pod for enhanced ergonomics. The climate control system is further augmented by the addition of window blinds for the front windshield and skylight. Acoustical engineering, in addition to the quiet N45 engine, contribute to extremely low in- cab noise levels, while the new sound system with Bluetooth® audio allows for hands-free communication.

The 234B platform is versatile for a variety of applications. The T234B is equipped with a

full forest-duty Tigercat-built undercarriage, which provides exceptional stability, flotation and track power. The 234B is available with the Tigercat AC16 articulating carrier, said to be an excellent choice for work in the woodyard at timber mills. More information from www.tigercat.com

Online certification tool for UK woodlands

bhsl Toploader The New Innovative Bulk Material Handling Solution

The UK branch of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has launched a new certification system designed to enable small and medium-sized woodland owners to participate in forest certification. The new online forest certification system aims to provide a simple and cost-effective solution to assist the UK’s small and medium-sized private forest owners to become PEFC-certified. The new tool is designed to help increase the UK’s certified forest area and boost the supply of certified material to the UK primary processing sector and its customers.

While PEFC forest certification has been established in the UK for five years, it has long been recognised that a cost-effective certification solu- tion was required to enable smaller woodland owners to participate in certification. Certified materials are now increasingly requested by a growing number of forest product users, including energy suppliers and

a growing number of consumers. More than one million hectares of UK forests have been certified to PEFC’s sustainable forest manage- ment standard since 2010. This covers all the Forestry Commission forests in England, Scotland and Wales and 500 privately-owned forest estates, including a number in Northern Ireland, managed through the Scottish Woodlands and UPM Tilhill forest Group Certi- fication schemes.

Developed in conjunction with Dutch consultant Evan Buytendijk BV, PEFC UK is confident that the online forest certification system will act as an aid to Group Certification Manag- ers, thus enabling these schemes to function more efficiently, reduce costs and become a user-friendly means of assessing the compatibility of existing forest management plans with those required by the UK Woodland Assur- ance Standard.
