a hit in Faroes Continued from page one carried on until 11.30pm. Gavin said: “The next daywe re-

ceived a standing ovation as we entered a local restaurant. Every- one was lovely.” He said Papa’s was invited to

take part in the festival because of the awards it had won. “The Faroe Islands don’t have fish and chip shops but they love the Great British dish,” he said. The team served about 4,000 portions in 12 hours at the event which was sponsored by JFK, a Faroese fishing fleet. The com- pany arranged a mini-shop and cooking equipment at the site and directors Jogvan and Hanus Han- son worked alongside the Papa’s team all day. Papa’s, run by brothers Theo

and Michael Papa-Adams, has since added another accolade to its collection. The outlet was named the best fish and chip shop in the Kent, Sussex and Surrey region in the 2016 Fish and Chip Awards, and will now compete for the Lon- don and South East England title. The shop has been invited to re-

turn to the Faroes for next year’s festival.

Community says its farewell to Father Jim

POPULAR parish priest Father Jim Brown gives his final service at St James the Great Church, East Malling on October 11. Father Jim, who has looked after

the parishes of East Malling, Teston and Wateringbury for nearly 14 years, is standing down to enjoy his retirement. People in the three areas have

come to know the vicar extremely well and he, together with his wife Jean, have offered support and ad- vice to all ages in the community, including the schools of St James the Great Academy and the Malling School, to which he has been a regular visitor. East Malling’s community newsletter In Touch comments that the ministry has benefited from Father Jim’s pastoral skills and wise counsel, as a real “people person”. It goes on to acknowledge the contribution made by his entire family, saying: “Jean, invariably be- hind the scene, has provided the stability of home life and her own gracious qualities of warmth and

wisdom to so many. It has been a partnership through which many have been blessed.” In wishing both a richly de-

served, long and happy retirement, it adds: “As they leave the parish and its people, may they go know- ing the admiration, gratitude and love that goes with them, and may they continue to find fulfilment in whatever they feel they want, or ought, to do in future years. May God bless them both, as they have blessed us.”

Father Jim says he will take with

him happy memories of the area. He added: “East Malling has

been a most wonderful place to be a part of and live in. There is some- thing very special about it, which includes its diversity, friendliness and joy. I find the people here gen- uine and sincere and I have only ever experienced support, rest and love.”

Father Jim intends to spend more

time with his families and pursuing his hobbies and interests. He said: “Moving on into retire-

ment will be interesting, challeng- ing and exciting, but I shan’t be bored. I shall be standing to one side and allowing my successor an opportunity to establish themselves and I respect this protocol. This, of course, will be difficuit for my wife and I because we have established many friendships and acquain- tances but we understand how im- portant it is. “Jean and I thank you all for the

past 14 years and pray that God will bless you all for the future.”
