downsmail.co.uk Facelift to boost
“twilight” zone WORK to revamp The Mall in Maidstone could see a new “twi- light” shopping facility to bridge the gap between day and night- time activities. Work on a £5m facelift, most of
which will take place during the night, will see new flooring, light- ing and entrances installed to the town centre shopping outlet to encourage more shoppers. Longer-term, owner Capital and
Regional plans to spend £100m on creating a cleaner, brighter centre that will encourage shop- pers to stay longer in town – and spend more money. New leisure facilities and addi-
tional food and drink outlets are planned to bridge the gap be- tween daytime shopping and the town’s busy night time economy – restaurants, bars, cinemas and nightclubs. The trademark canopy in King
Street will be taken down as part of the first phase, being replaced with a bright new glass entrance, along with changes to the other main entrance at the bottom of Gabriel’s Hill. Capital and Regional says im-
provements to another of its out- lets led to a 2% increase in footfall.
News Pub sends aid to Calais
A VAN full of toiletries, clothes, tents and essentialswas on itsway to Calais, thanks to regulars at The Old Rectory in Leybourne and peo- ple from the surrounding area. Pub landlord Stewart Rayner says
TV coverage of the immigrant crisis in Calais, particularly reports of a young child drowning in an effort to reach safety, prompted him to put an appeal on Leybourne’s commu- nity Facebook page. Within days, items including new
shoes and clothes, tarpaulins, shower gel and soap had begun to
arrive at the Oxley Lane pub. Hesaid: “From a simple Facebook request, we have a van full of sup- port going out to Calais.” He thanked all those who re- sponded to theweek-long appeal for items, whichwere picked up by the CalAid charity for distribution in France. Mr Rayner said: “I’ve never done anything like this
before.Aside from the politics of this, I simply felt that these people needed help and they were unlikely to get it from any- where else.”
Site needed for outdoor gym LEYBOURNE residents have been asked to help the parish council choose an ideal site for an outdoor gym. The council has shortlisted three locations but needs to get the proj-
ect moving by November 2015 or funding from Sport England will be lost, and with it the chance to have the facility. The proposed sites are next toWillowmead, the Bomb Hole and near
the children’s play area close to the donkey field. Villagers were being asked for their views in an initial 14-day dis- cussion on the parishwebsite before a formal public consultation. The parish council said: “It has been highlighted many times on so-
cial media that we do not have enough facilities for teenagers and adults in the village. We feel the equipment would be beneficial to all residents looking to use the outdoor space that we have to remain fit and healthy.
