Morse is must for opening night

THE fifth Music@Malling Festival opens on Sunday, September 20 at 5pm in St Mary’s West Malling, with one of the world’s top studio orchestras, the London Metropolitan Orchestra, performing the music of Barrington Pheloung.

Famous for his scores for Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour, the concert will feature Pheloung’s music live to picture and explore the relationship between classical music and the world of television and film.

His inspired opening cue for Inspector Morse with the distinctive morse code and the hauntingly beautiful guitar solo (performed by the composer) is one of the iconic TV themes of all time.

One of his hallmarks as a composer is finding the crossover between new music and the classics. Morse – the detective memorably played by John Thaw – is a classical music lover and his passions – Schubert, Beethoven, Puccini,

Mozart, Bach – are interleaved

with Pheloung’s cues, which often develop material from these composers.

The opening concert for

Music@Malling explores these classical inspirations and includes Bach – Brandenburg Concerto No.3, BWV.1048 as well as cues from Morse, Lewis, Endeavour, Hilary and Jackie and Truly, Madly, Deeply. Expect an evening of anecdotes and behind the scenes insights into composing and recording music for television and film as well as performances from musicians that have worked very closely with the composer for over thirty years.

Caroline Dale – solo cellist and principal of the English Chamber Orchestra will be performing the music that Barrington composed for her for Hilary and Jackie – a biopic of the legendary cellist, Jaqueline Du Pre.

Lights, Camera, Action! is sponsored

by Liberty Property Trust – the curators of King’s Hill.

Music@Malling runs from the 20th - 27th September and features outstanding musical events in historical venues in and around West Malling.

LOCAL KCC Councillor Trudy Dean is once again making £10,000 available to local groups from West Malling, East Malling and Larkfield from her county councillors' community fund. The money will be allocated at the popular Dragon's Den event at The Mallings School on a Saturday afternoon in late November (date still to be announced).

Cllr Dean said: "This is a hugely enjoyable event. Any resident of West or East Malling or Larkfield can attend, have lunch which is provided, and spend some council tax money to do some good locally. Don't be put off by having to do a presentation... The audience is very enthusiastic, and what's the worst that can happen in three minutes?"

Groups wanting to take part must complete an application form by the end of October.

Application forms are available from anne.charman@kent.gov.uk
