Travellers moved on from village play area

Flytippers close


AWEST Malling roadwas blocked by flytipping for the second time in two months. KCC put diversions in place by


KCC while it dealt with rubbish dumped in Fartherwell Road. The same stretch near Teston


Road was closed two months ear- lier after rubbish was dumped.


LEYBOURNE residents and parish councillors swung into action im- mediately after travellers moved onto a popular play area in the vil- lage. Within 30 minutes of the vehicles driving onto the Bomb Hole site, parish council chairman Cllr Bob Ulph had contacted Tonbridge and Malling Council’s legal team and en- forcement officers visited. Police were also alerted and Inspector Kerry Rothwell and 12 officerswent to the scene. Cllr Ulph, who met the police on


site, said: “After discussions between Inspector Rothwell and the traveller families, they agreed to leave the site immediately andwere duly escorted by the police out of Leybourne.” Residents had posted news of the encampment on the village’s Face- book site, complaining that children would not be able to play at their favourite place. The travellers’ arrival prompted memories of lastsummerwhengyp- sies set up camp on sites in Lil- lieburn and CastleWay for several days. At the time, villagers inun-

dated the parish council with calls to report criminal damage, brawls be- tween travellers and excrement being thrown around. Concerns were expressed then about the re- luctance of the police to get involved and the time taken to obtain a court order and remove the travellers. A massive clean-up had to be un- dertaken and ragstone boulders were placed around the open space in CastleWay to prevent a further in- vasion. Cllr Ulph said he had instigated


the borough council enforcement and welfare liaison procedures and


senior police officials had been con- tacted. The parish council would be writing to thank the police and the village PCSO Phillip Harrison who had been on site throughout the in- cident. He added: “The parish council

the borough council and leased to the parish council.
