ck Centre nd women with their recovery Case Study –SAC Richard Thompson S
AC Richard Tompson, a Weapons Technician from Kent was diagnosed with a brain tumour in late 2013
and underwent a major operation to remove it in summer 2014. In between rehabilitation at Headley Court, Richard attended a MAC in October 2014 – “despite strong recommendations about the Course, I was nervous about going to Lilleshall and was expecting a PowerPoint based week!” How wrong he was. Reflecting on his week on the MAC, Richard has some very powerful things to say about his time at Lilleshall:
“The MAC has completely changed my feelings towards doing things, I had doubts about what I could do but the Course gave me real confidence. There are so many positive notes and so many happy stories from my time there. It has opened my eyes to new experiences like sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball, and it gave me challenges too with the caving climbing. The instructors
are genuinely friendly and will find solutions for you to do all the activities. The group briefings and chats are a great opportunity to talk about what you’ve learned and set personal aims for the day ahead. The rooms are top quality and the food is excellent. During the week I kept thinking that something bad would come up between the good experiences, but it didn’t and I had an amazing week.”
Richard returned to the Centre in April this year and completed the Golf Skills Course, with the golf coaching provided by On-Course Foundation. He had another beneficial week and showed great improvement in his golf which he intends to continue during his recovery. He summed it up by saying: “The golf course was a brilliant week, spending time outdoors with great instructors and other students, and it really improved my game”.
In endorsing the impact that the Battle Back Centre courses have had on his recovery, he concluded: “Sensational and inspiring, both physical and mentally”.
Richard is now on the strength of the RAF PRU and is working hard at his rehabilitation and recovery from a life-changing illness.
