believe the calculation to be flawed. There will be a template Appeals Form provided, which will give guidance on those elements of the banding that can be challenged.

Single Living Accommodation (SLA) – In my last post I mentioned that I would attempt to shine some light on the joy of living in SLA. I say joy because in the years I have been in this role in the Federation, I have only dealt with a handful of cases. This suggests that those in SLA are blissfully happy with their lot, which, if it were correct, would represent an extraordinary level of satisfaction. After all, there are in excess of 120,000 bed spaces for MOD personnel; nearly three times the number of SFA.

I am aware that SLAM, where available, has brought about significant improvements in the size, comfort and quality of living space while no doubt attracting top monthly charges as well. However I have heard that SLAM accommodation can leave Service Personnel (SP) feeling more insular, interacting less with their fellow SP outside their working environment. Is this true? If you have any experience of this, please let us know. Is SLA just a functional space to lay your head during the week while you return to family or loved

ones at weekends? Or is it your permanent home? What do you like and dislike most about your SLA?

We have also received some issues from people living in SLAM who have been ostracized by their colleagues because of their high standards of hygiene and cleanliness and the laxness of neighbours in the communal areas. This has resulted in some cases, with the individuals considering local private rental accommodation. Do others experience similar situations? Do many of you feel the quality of life in SLAM is degraded by the actions (or inactions) of a few?

Another issue raised with us was of a single mother wanting her SFA rent held in abeyance until the end of her deployment because SPs in SLA do not pay for their SLA whilst on deployment, is this right, is it fair, is it nonsense?

Lastly, CAAS for SLA is planned to be introduced in Apr 2017 – so watch this space.

Tenancy Deposit Loan Scheme July saw the new Tenancy Deposit Loan Scheme launched, which will allow SP to

apply for a loan in the form of an advance of pay, to meet the cost of a deposit for a rental property, mirroring a similar scheme for MOD Civilian personnel. The MOD has now adopted the scheme for SP, recognising that this provides a further element of choice, especially for those SP who are not entitled to SFA. It may even make renting an option for the SLAM case example I referred to earlier. The next article explains more...
