CELEBRATING THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN 75TH ANNIVERSARY
Honour Through Deeds Granddaughter Claire, of former Royal Air Force Spitfire Pilot in 288 Squadron,
Lester Le Brocq sent in this poem as a dedication to her grandfather’s contribution to WW2. What more fitting time to share this with you than on the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain – never to be forgotten.
Claire shared with us a little insight in to Lester’s history:
“Grandpa trained at The Number 3 British Flying Training School, a branch of the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Miami.
“After WW2 he reluctantly returned to Jersey to maintain the family farm and help his elderly parents look after his Down Syndrome brother, even though he wished to stay in the RAF and further his career. He met my grandmother during his time in the Services in Scotland and had a son, daughter and five grandchildren.
“Whilst in Jersey he enjoyed playing golf and introduced his son to the game who went on to become a PGA professional golfer who competed in Europe and South Africa.”
As with many, Lester spoke very little about his time in the RAF during the war and sadly passed away in 1992 having suffered in the end with both legs amputated up to the knee. Unfortunately, his medals have gone missing which could also tell the family more about his time in the RAF.
Grandpa & Claire
Claire often writes poetry and she is in the process of writing her first WW2 novel, which hopefully she will finish at some point in the future.
