NAPLES PRESERVE A CITY OF NAPLES ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE SITE

The Naples Preserve was saved in 2000 for preservation with its purchase being financed by a $9 million bond referendum. Hundreds of volunteer hours were then spent removing exotic vegetation and decades of trash accumulation. The 0.4 mile-long, accessible boardwalk was constructed with lumber form the Brazilian plantation-grown ipe (e-pay), Tabebuia impetiginosa. In 2008, ten gopher tortoises were legally relocated to this property from a local construction site. Today, this unique urban oasis serves as a home for native wild animals and birds as well as a place for people to experience and to learn about the natural environment of Naples-past. Located on the east side of the parking lot, there is a place to sit and relax in the shade of sand live oak trees while viewing birds, gopher tortoises and butterflies. A mulched, winding path will take you through a natural occurring garden which is filled with labeled, native flora.
