Care home fails to meet standard
A CARE home for the elderly in Maidstone criticised for a cata- logue of failings will continue to be monitored by the Care Quality Commission after a follow-up in- spection found it had made few improvements. The inspection focused on what
Mont Calm Residential Home, in Bower Mount Road, had done to rectify breaches in health and social care regulations, found during an unannounced visit by the CQC in January. The CQC, which took enforce-
ment action against owner MGL Healthcare Ltd, issuingwarning no- tices about safeguarding residents from abuse and having enough staff, also found further breaches in that inspection regarding nutrition, privacy and dignity, obtaining con- sent, handling complaints, staff training and record keeping. This time, thehomewas given no-
tice of the inspection, but still had no registered manager, had failed to send progress updates and one res- ident was suffering from malnutri- tion.
The report added: “Some im-
provements had been made but the provider had not met the require- ments of thewarning noticeswe is- sued at our last inspection.” The inspectors noted that resi-
dents’ safety was still inadequately protected, leadership of the home was inadequate and both caring and the responsiveness of the home to residents’ needs required improve- ment.
Specific problems included some residents not receiving enough to eat and drink and others their med- icines as prescribed. The report noted: “During this inspection we saw that one person’s food and fluid chart showed that theywere not re- ceiving adequate nutrition. This per- son, whowas identified as at risk of malnutrition had lost six kilograms since our last inspection. Although the deputy manager told us they provided fortified milkshakes and other fortified foods for peoplewho were at risk, this person’s records showed that only one milkshake had been given in a seven-day pe- riod.” However, the report noted that “improvements had been made in nutrition for most people”. Improvements had been made in
that most people who had wounds such as ulcers now had short-term care plans. The report continued: “People
told us they felt safe andwell looked after. However, our own observa- tions and the records we looked at did not always match the positive descriptions people had given us.” The CQC has issued new guid-
ance to the home, requiring it to make further improvements. A spokesman for Kent County Council said: “Although the feed- backwe have received from families and residents has been positive,we continue to work with Mont Calm and our partner agencies, including the CQC, to support the home in meeting its required standards.”
