Maidstone Borough Council is run by councillors who you vote for at local elections. Councillors make decisions for the community about local services, for example rubbish and recycling collections and leisure facilities, and agree budgets and council tax charges.


They represent residents in areas, called wards, for four


years. The work of a councillor includes helping local people, supporting local organisations, campaigning on local issues, and developing links with all parts of the community.

They are not employees and are not paid a salary or wages but they are entitled to allowances and expenses to cover some of the costs of carrying out their duties.
