RENT This Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning rock musical hits Orange County’s LGBT theatre company, The-
atre Out, for the first time. Set in New York City’s Lower East Side, during the days of Bohemia in Alphabet City,RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT is a pop culture phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates for audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, RENT (previewed in San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse) follows a year in the life of a group of young artists, struggling to survive the ‘90s and “create,” in the shadow of poverty, illness and HIV/AIDS. STANLEY ANN The Los Angeles LGBT Center presents
the world premiere production of Stanley Ann: The Unlikely Story of Barack Obama’s Mother. This revealing and electrifying new one-woman play, written by Mike Kindle and starring Ann Noble, chronicles the life of Stanley Ann Dunham, from her young adult years in Hawaii, to her later professional life in Indonesia. Stanley Ann plays at The Center’s Davidson/Valentini Theatre from Thursday, July 9 through Sunday, July 26. Drawing on actual events, the play follows an idealistic college student, who impulsively marries a Kenyan first and then an Indone- sian. Soon finding herself the housewife of a minor official, in a corrupt Third-World government. While managing to raise two children, she goes on to become a respected anthropologist and one of the developers of microfinance—small loans given to villager entrepreneurs, especially women entrepre- neurs, in developing countries. PACIFIC SYMPHONY SUMMER FESTIVAL Pack a picnic, chill some wine and enjoy five
great summer nights under the stars with Pacific Symphony at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre (formerly Verizon Wireless Amphitheater). The 2015 Summer Festival kicks off on Saturday, July 4 with a rollicking, high-energy July 4th Spectacular, featuring the classic tunes of one of America’s most beloved bands, Journey, brought to life by the tribute band, Faithfully. The Symphony’s Independence Day concert begins early with picnicking on the grounds and culminates in a brilliant fireworks display, set to music performed by the orchestra. The festivities also pay homage to America’s war heroes and veterans through a salute to the U.S. armed forces. Next up on Saturday, July 25 is Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Schehe- razade. Enjoy the enduring melodies from the masters—Beethoven’s impressive and majestic concerto from the age of revolution and Rimsky- Korsakov’s vast palette of orchestral colors and gorgeous melodies that spin tales of the Arabian Nights. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. It’s a night at the movies on Saturday, August 22 as Pacific Symphony’s Summer Festival presents an out of this world event featuring Star Trek (2009). On the big screen: J.J. Abrams’ blockbuster featuring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto “boldly going where no one has gone before.” Pacific Symphony per- forms live, the Academy Award-winning Michael Giacchino’s score. Gates open at 6 p.m. Come dressed as your favorite Star Trek character. The traditional end to Pacific Symphony’s Summer Festival, Tchaikovsky Spectacular, takes place on Saturday, September 5 and includes the thrilling climax of thundering cannons and spectacular fireworks in Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture. Enjoy also, some of the most enchant- ing pieces by other favorite Russian composers; including Rachmaninoff’s hugely popular and achingly romantic Piano Concerto No. 2. Gates open at 6 p.m.
