WHO KNEW? It isn’t without a great deal of incredulity, that I
sit down to write my editor’s notes for the month of July. I’m still reeling from the astonishing news that occurred as we were going to press. There is such a crunch for time during the process, that I really haven’t taken the time to process it all. Marriage equality is the law of the land? Wow,
just, WOW. If you had asked my younger self, that shy, confused, little, gay kid from small-town Wisconsin, if marriage was even going to be an option, my guess is that he would have looked at you like you were a Martian… and then, run screaming. It wasn’t even in the scope of my understanding at that point, the idea of accep- tance on that level. Time certainly changes things. We all have our
process, each of us has a story that represents what being LGBT and coming out was like. Some of them are simple, some of them are complex, but all of them are a journey, for certain. It’s an honor doing my job and so lovely, because I get to write about and hear so many compelling sto- ries, from unique and interesting people, with all kinds of backgrounds. It’s even more fascinating too, how similar much of what we search for is, as well. From crib to grave, we all look for love, ac-
ceptance and recognition on some level, that is universal. As we age though, the need for it hopefully lessens a bit, as we learn to go within for validation. I don’t care how strong you are though, when a decision like this happens that validates your right to be who you are and to love who you choose to love—especially on a national level as did the Supreme Court deci- sion—it’s like nothing else on earth. We were okay before this momentous deci-

sion and would have managed if it hadn’t gone our way. It had to be done, when the Prop 8 decision came down in 2008. We survived it and moved forward, but the burn of that nullification was intense and lasting. When a society tells you that you do not have the right to enjoy the same freedoms as they do, it absolutely denigrates who you are as a human being. I am proud and happy to say that for the first
time in a very long time, my faith in govern- ment, “for all the people,” has been bolstered. We can now enjoy the protections of marriage, shared property, the ability to make unfettered decisions about property rights, healthcare for spouses, familial rights and the myriad of others that come from having the right in the eyes of the law. It’s a good feeling. No, it’s a friggin’ amaz- ing feeling. And, for that little boy I dragged from Wisconsin to California? Let’s just say that he is fully ready, to step into the possibilities now being offered. It’s time to celebrate, brothers and sisters,
celebrate this victory and show your Pride. Go ahead… love who you love, get married if you like. Or at the very least, get out and do a happy turn, on a more equal street!
Why do I feel like I just got the biggest hug ever?
