Reading – Comprehension
ENGLAND Develop positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read by increasing their familiarity with a wide range of books... and retelling some of these orally.
WALES Recognise and understand the characteristics of different genres in terms of language, structure and presentation; consider what they read/view, responding orally and in writing to the ideas, vocabulary, style, presentation and organisation of image and language, and be able to select evidence to support their views.
SCOTLAND Share their thoughts about structure, characters and/or setting, recognise the writer’s message and relate it to their own experiences, and comment on the effective choice of words and other features.
NORTHERN IRELAND Extend the range of their reading and develop their own preferences; reconsider their initial response to texts in the light of insight and information which emerge subsequently from their reading.
• Share the text ‘The Old Man and the Golden Fish’, which is a traditional Chinese tale, with the children online or in print.
• Ask the children if it reminds them of any other stories they know or have heard it before. • Encourage the children to read the story independently in silent reading, or get them to read it in pairs.
• Introduce the concept that this story has a moral – explain what a moral is. Ask the children to think about what the story is telling us and then identify what the moral of the story is. [not to be greedy]
• Ask further questions about the story – e.g.: • How many characters are there in the story? [2]
• Where is the story set? [on a lake, with a house nearby] You could discuss the fact that this is all the information available from the story as told. If there were illustrations, it would possibly make us think
it was set in a forest, or by the sea, because illustrations can affect our understanding of the story. We also assume it is in China because it is a traditional Chinese story, but there is nothing in the text to say that this is so – in fact, it could be set in any country.
