Proof that sport can overcome barriers 5-a-side Tournament


The Orchard School (Canterbury) is a school which caters for pupils with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties. Pupils are aged between five and sixteen, all of whom have a statement of special educational needs, with some having additional problems such as autistic spectrum disorders or learning difficulties. This means that the school is constantly looking for new ways to engage and motivate their pupils so that they all achieve and have success. Every day class plans need to be adapted to try and get the best out of pupils and there is an underlying theme of finding innovative ways to positively impact on children’s behaviour.


Due to the school being deemed a ‘special school’, they are placed in sporting competitions with schools whose pupils are less able. Jake Allchin (Primary PE Lead) therefore wanted to look at ways in which we could integrate the school into competing against mainstream schools to improve competition and to also use sport as a mechanism to improve ‘whole school’ issues.


How did it come about?


The school contacted Kent Sport after attending the Kent Primary PE Conference in October to discuss some basic ideas over the ways in
