Players seek canine star
THE legendary Noel Coward might have said “Don’t put your daughter on the stage Mrs Wor- thington” but he didn’t say any- thing about the dog! Now Maidstone’s travelling the-
atre company is looking to take a leaf out of the playwright’s book as it puts on his play “Hay Fever” as part of their summer season. The Changeling Theatre, headed
by director Rob Forknall, will per- form the play in 15 venues between July 3 andAugust 16, but it’s the ac- companying production of Shake- speare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” which needs some canine intervention. Rob, from Sutton Valence, will shortly be auditioning four-legged friends for the part of Crabb. The original canine character is
believed to have been a lurcher but Rob is prepared to look at any type of breed which might fit the bill. The dog will need to work closely with the actors, be well- trained and not be afraid of ap- pearing on stage. Also, the owner would need to go on tour with the production. your dog to star with them, email

BrownOwl’s award for 50 years with Guiding
A STAPLEHURST woman has been presented with a long service award for her dedication to Girl- guiding during the past 50 years. Doreen Braganza has completed
almost 3,000 hours of Brownie meet- ings, as well as all the trips, camps, holidays and extra days out she has organised. She has been affiliated to most of
the Brownie units in Staplehurst since shemoved to Kent in 1980. She is best known for running the 1st Staplehurst Brownies since 1986. She has been district commis-
sioner and has helped with Rain- bows – the junior branch of Brownies. Her volunteering began with the
18th Sutton Brownies in Surrey in 1965. As Brown Owl she was with the
pack until 1972 when her family moved to Somerset. She went on to spend five years
with 1st Uphill St Nicholas Brown- ies and a further three years with 1st Fivehead Brownies, both in Somer- set.
In 2011, Doreen helped to lead a life-changing trip to God’s Golden Acre, an orphanage and outreach programme in SouthAfrica. She also helped bring its theatre group, the Young ZuluWarriors, to Staplehurst. Doreen, pictured, was presented
with a specially-designed brooch in honour of her years of service by Sally Christmas, Girlguiding Kent Weald’s county commissioner at a recent ceremony at Foxlease House in the New Forest. Sally said: “Doreen has been an in- spiration to somanygirls and young women. Her hard work and dedica- tion is a credit to the Staplehurst dis- trict and to local guiding in general.” The other leaders in Staplehurst
threw a surprise party to thank Doreen for all her help. Helen Tucker and Susanna Jones, Staplehurst district commissioners, said:“We would like to congratulate Doreen on her amazing achievement and for everything she has done for Guiding. I would especially like to thank her for all the knowledge and assistance that she has givenmeover the years. We know that many of us have benefited from Doreen’s time and commitment.” Doreen said: “I’m extremely
proud to have received this award. I have gained so much from Guiding through the years and I never would have thought that when I joined 50 years ago I would still be involved. “I would like to dedicate this
award to all the girls I have had the pleasure of knowing over the last 50 years because watching them grow and achieve has been an incredibly rewarding experience.” Girlguiding Kent Weald needs a further 50 volunteers to support its local groups. Call 0800 1 69 59 01 or visit
