FAMILY YBER SAFE?
Y0UR COMPUTER AND DEVICES Our devices, many of them termed SMART, are incredibly capable pieces of equipment. Did you know that the average mobile phone has more computer processing power than NASA had available to put a man on the moon? Attacks that target our devices are surprisingly easy to conduct. Here are some simple steps to mitigate many of those threats:
Ensure ALL devices are PIN protected and are running the latest software version. Where available, enable automatic updating and back-up your data regularly. Also ensure Firewall and Anti-Virus are installed and enabled.
If possible, have two home computers, one for adults and one for the kids! Ensure all family members have separate log-on accounts and that kids accounts do not have privileged access (information available online at
getsafeonline.org).
Before disposal, be sure to erase (or wipe) all personal or sensitive information. For mobile devices you may have to select a ‘factory reset’ option.
RAF Community of the potential threats in Cyberspace, but more importantly provides easy, practical steps that we can take to maintain our family’s online safety.

YOUR PASSWORDS AND ONLINE ACCOUNTS Do you know how many accounts you have with online services and websites? Many of you, unknowingly, will have over 100 accounts. All of this information needs to be protected, here are key steps to help you do this:
• Purchase a reputable Password Manager (available on your PC and mobile devices). A premium ‘paid for’ management application is arguably the safest way of safely storing your credentials.
• Use long passwords that are hard to guess. Services like
www.passwordmeter.com will show you exactly how strong your password is. Additionally, do not recycle passwords. A different password should be used for each account (these can be recorded in your password manager).
• When using Social Networks (FaceBook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc) post only what you would like the public to see. Imagine you are shouting this information across a crowded area; would you be happy doing so? Remember – what goes online stays online! You should always apply security settings and have a closed profile so that only ‘friends’ can view your profile.
• Emails (SPAM and Phishing scams). Do not, under any circumstances, click on or open websites and/or documents within emails that you do not recognise. Ensure your SPAM filters and blocking are switched on.
