and realistic and I could really identify with some of their business examples.”

Amanda is now successfully running ‘Sew fun in the attic’ from their base in Episkopi taking regular orders and achieving her own career aspirations.

Amanda took several commissions for theatrical and historical costumes but after a short time they received a new posting order to Cyprus.

“I dabbled in making a few products for friends and as word of mouth spread I started to take more orders. I was told I could sell my designs through the local craft shop on camp so I set to apply for a licence to trade. The legislation is quite complex and I had to provide a lot of supporting documents but eventually I was granted my licence and started to sell my products across both RAF bases in Cyprus.”

In September 2014, Amanda enrolled on the ‘Supporting the Unsung Hero Programme’ delivered by the University of Wolverhampton. “The course was fantastic and gave me the knowledge and understanding to manage my own accounting system and direct my business plan. The course mentors are down to earth

“I miss making historical costumes so I was overjoyed when our community theatre company asked me to make their pantomime outfits for last year’s performances. This has led to me taking commissions for a ‘Jack Sparrow’ costume and the ‘Shakespeare’ company in Akrotiri. I also made poppies for last year’s appeal and raised 400 euros and I am already taking orders for this year.”

Amanda ‘s next step is to start trading at local fairs across the MoD bases in Cyprus to gain valuable experience before exhibiting at a major UK arts and craft exhibition in the next couple of years.
