WIFI Your WiFi router (often referred to as an Access Point) is a physical device used to connect your devices to the internet. As all your internet ‘traffic’ passes through this, it is important to ensure it is secured. To maintain security on your home WiFi network you should: • ALWAYS change the default password on the router to a strong one you know. Guidance to do this can be found online. • Always use the strongest encryption; this is currently WPA2. • Avoid, if possible, logging into personal financial and/or sensitive accounts when using Public WiFi
I HEAR PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT CYBER, WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?
According to the concise Oxford English Dictionary, Cyber is defined as: “relating to or characteristics of the culture of computers, information technology and virtual reality.” This, in short, means that virtually every aspect of working and personal life in 2015 is directly or indirectly affected by Cyber and Cyberspace. Separately, the Internet of Things (IoT) is no longer a distant aspiration, it is real. The IoT is a development of the Internet in which everyday objects (such as your fridge, car, television) have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data. Are you ready for your fridge to order it’s own milk once supplies are running low? This technology is just around the corner.
ARE ME AND MY FAMILY CYBER TARGETS? Basically, Yes! With vast amounts of personal information available freely online, Cybercrime has become a chosen career path for many individuals and groups. Using various forms and techniques, we
are all potential targets to these actors as the majority of this activity is incredibly financially profitable.
HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY WITHIN CYBERSPACE? Firstly, common sense is your best line of defence. If something doesn’t sound right, is out of the ordinary or is simply too good to be true; chances are it is not okay. Our adversaries have learned that the best way of getting your information is to simply ask for it. Attacks of this nature include Phishing emails/Scam phone calls etc and are termed as ‘Social Engineering’ attacks. This article looks to educate the wider
